Why Should we look for Mutual Benefits? Episode 87, LIFE LESSONS

Benefits can be one side or mutual. Here is why we should always choose that leads to mutual benefit.

Hi friends and welcome to Life Lessons.

As I was talking with one of my uncles we came across the topic of career. As a part of it, he tried to narrate his own experience in facing various interviews. One of the interviews that he stated was interesting and something different to learn from. I would like to narrate the same in the coming lines.

When he went for the interview, the first thing that was noticed is the dressing and posture and then the qualifications. By the time he was attending the interview, he already had experience of nearly 3 years in another organization. He was the marketing in charge for hometown in the past three years. After asking few questions, the new company was ready to offer him a job, and that too with a higher pay scale for the same designation in his hometown.

To this, I asked him, what was the reason behind the company paying a higher salary for the same designation. He smiled and replied, “This is the game of mutual benefit. I was a candidate want a better pay scale, this is the reason why I attended the interview. On the other hand, they as a competing company wanted to establish their presence in our town.”

I further asked, what the reason was behind selected him and not anyone else. He replies, “As a renowned person in this town. I already have a good name regarding my sales and products. This is what the new company wants to grab for the existing one. No new one can replace me in terms of connections and strengths in this region.”

Mutual benefit

That day I understood the difference between mutual benefits and the one side benefit. My father used to say that everyone in this world lives for his (her) own will. No one will work or do anything for the benefit of the others.

Mutual Benefit is such a decision that proves to be useful and advantageous for both parties. The example that I stated above would be a good example for the same. This is a good sign o any agreement. But many people try to pretend that the agreement is mutually beneficial, but is not. It is on our part to determine whether this agreement is a mutually beneficial one or not.

What can we do in this scenario?

The scenario is all good until the agreement lies mutual in reality. But this doesn’t happen. There was a dispute regarding a property. The property was a commercial space in a good area. The elder and younger brothers went to the community head with this dispute.  The head had decided a price of Rs10 lacs for space, which implies that each brother has a share of Rs5 Lakhs. Now the decision was with the brothers. Anyone could purchase the other one’s share giving several Rs5lakhs. The younger one was not that sound financially. He thought that selling the share would help him financially. This made the elder one buy the younger one’s share.

Here is where the younger brother has made a mistake. He has not enquired about the future of the space he was leaving off. Soon after he left the share, there was a sudden development in that area. A government office is being sanctioned opposite to the space that he left. This was known by the elder brother, but he has not stated it. This was also known as the head too. Without this knowledge, the poor younger one has left his share.

This is the best example of how the mutual benefits are misinterpreted.  The younger brother is actually betrayed in the name of mutual benefit. We need to thus very careful when we are going to enter a mutual agreement.

We should understand every dimension of the agreement before we go for it. Sometimes we may know the opposite party is getting more benefits, but yet we have to enter it. For instance, a middle-class father had to find a match for his daughter. For this, he had to arrange a huge amount of money. So he decided to sell a piece of land. The buyer knowing the need of the man offers something less than the market price. In this case, there are many chances that the father gets ready to sell. It is because it is his need for money. He knows that the other party gets more benefits than he is.

In cases where we know that the other party is getting benefitted and yet we are ready for it, no problem arises here. The problem only arises when we are unaware of the hidden benefits of the other party.

Bottom line:

All these observations that I have stated above bring us all to only one bottom line, always be careful.  Whenever we have a chance, we should always prefer that chance that is mutually beneficial. When we are entering into a mutual benefitting agreement, we need to research and be aware of all the exposure as well as the hidden benefits of the other party before we can decide about entering into the agreement.
