The Longest Life Research Ever Episode 110, LIFE LESSONS AJ

The longest research on life is 75 years old. Such a long span is really worth observing. Let us look into the same in this episode.

Hi friends and welcome to Life Lessons

Many people including me always search for the answer to an important question - What makes a good life.  Some people perceive that they knew the answer. But it is not generally true. There was a general questionnaire held with a group of young adults in which they were asked what the ultimate goal in life was. 80 percent of the sample population answered that getting rich is the ultimate goal in life. And 50 percent of the sample population also answered that getting famous is also the goal in life. I feel that the answers given are expected ones.

Let us take a minute to understand the reason behind it. Why most young adults think that getting rich and getting fame is the ultimate goal in life? The answer is simple. The people and the society teach this to the generation. Children right from the start of their schooling are taught that earning lots of money and getting fame is the goal in life. But the longest ever life research gives some other answers for this.

The Longest ever life research

Every one of us wants to know the actual answer to what the ultimate goal of life is and what makes out a good life. Here 'ultimate' depicts that this goal should satisfy all ages of a person. When different stages of life are considered it is difficult for a person to forecast and understand the probable answer.

In 1938, research was started with a sole motto to study several lives at different stages and find the answer to this particular question.

The researchers have selected 724 people and decided to study their lives regularly. Half of these populations were young graduates from Harward during the time of WWII. And the rest of the population were boys from the streets of Boston. This was done to ensure to study the lives of all sorts of people. Due to these diverse possibilities in samples, the researchers were able to study lives in detail. Some of these people became professionals like doctors and lawyers, while others turned out to professions like bricklayers, laborers, etc.

This research was able to get good results due to the diversity in lifestyles of the people. The interesting fact is that this research is still active and is taking data from left out 60 members who are in their 90s. The researchers also took data from the family members of these people too.

Points to be noted

1.       Not all the people in the research flourished in their life, some people couldn’t cope with the social constraints. But some people were successful professionals.

2.       After so long research, the conclusions were all pointing out to only one point the importance of relations.

Lessons from this Longest Life Research

This remarkable research pointed out the importance of relations in life. The entire conclusion from some thousands of pages of information can be divided into three lessons on a whole:

1.      Social Connections are really good for us:

It is observed that the people who are socially well connected are healthier, physically stronger, and have lived for more years. The experience of loneliness is toxic. Loneliness in middle age declines the brain functioning gradually.

2.      Not just the number but the quality of relationships matter

Many people may have a large number of friends and various social commitments. But what matters is the quality of the relationships. What more matters is the quality of the close relationships one has. For example, conflicted marriage life is not healthy. In fact, if we tend to measure, conflicted marriage life is probably worse than a divorce. It is observed that when a person is happy with marriage life at 50, the person is healthiest in the 80s. A good relation lets us away from various constraints of getting old. A happy couple at the age of 80 tends to stay happy despite small differences.

3.      Relationships just don’t protect our bodies but also, protect our brains.

It is observed that people in the 80s with relationships are not only protective but can retain their memories. It is because the couple has one another to count on in times of need, thus a better memory. The relationship may have many disturbances, but the tendency to count on one another in the time of need is what makes the day.

Bottom Line:

Many pieces of research started on many subjects, but none of them lasted more than a decade. There may be many reasons for it- Lack of sponsorship, lack of motivation, or the exit of the researchers due to retirement. But this research I stated above is not the case like that. Here the researchers kept this alive handing it to next-generation researchers. This is the reason it is still live after a long span of 75 years. Currently, this research is going on under the direction of psychiatrist Robert Waldinger.

The conclusion is precise and simple- Good and close relationships are good for our health and wellbeing and account for a good life.

I strongly believe that the conclusion given by this research is valid because the span of 75 years is really something that would definitely gain our belief. Hope these conclusions will make us improve our life. No matter what is your age, it is never too late to do anything.
