There’s always a bigger fish, Episode 46, LIFE LESSONS

Hi friends and welcome to Life Lessons.

Have you ever wondered why dreams of many are always incomplete? Well the answer is straight forward- there is always a shift in goal posts.

What are goal posts and why do they tend to move? Check out previous episode- My Perception towards Finance here for your answer.

One of the important reasons why our goal posts in life change is that out scale of comparison rises as we grow. We select a person whom we compare with to become happy/successful in life. This may be our father, brother, uncle or some other.

After some time when we tend to grow and reach near to this point, our perception change. We no more feel that he is the scale of measurement for us.

We now select another person at higher level and start comparing our self with them. And this procedure continues throughout our life. The real concern here is not the tendency to compare with others, but is that we never feel satisfied of our growth because we go on a person at much higher level.

This steals away all the joy we have in life. Thus it is popularly denoted that ‘There’s always a bigger Fish’.

There’s always a bigger fish Origin:

There is always an origin no matter how huge the matter is. Same is the case of this proverb too. It represents the food chain of fishes in deep waters. It is common phenomenon that a small fish is eaten by big fish and this in turn eaten by a bigger fish. This process actually continues to large extent. This lead to a popular proverb.

This proverb now I used can be interpreted in various contexts. It generally refers to the comparison of people- not only in case of finance only but also in various other instances. For example: Students feel pressurized under a teacher and feel that teacher is a free bird, as he (she) has no burden. But the real fact is that a principle sits above teachers who guides and pressures them in the administration. And this process continues

We all may be aware of the blockbuster movie KGF. This movie perfectly represents this proverb. As Rocky (Protagonist) tries to defeat a Don, he comes across a bigger one with more power. In fact, this is the truth in life which we need to understand.

Whenever we feel that we are successful after passing a stage, there is always a bigger problem waiting for us to be defeated.

As far as our perception for finance is considered we need to remember this while growing in life.  When we start comparing with a person, a day will come when we change this person for comparison. This habit is to be avoided because this will not let us live in peace. This aspect is to be underlined for healthy financial life without any worries.

Well the question now would be- If we stop comparing with others, whom should we compare with?

You can compare with yourself.

How?

You can compare your current financial life with yourself few months or years ago. This will let you know whether you are growing in life or not. When you are growing this comparison will double the motivation to move forward. Thus this process is a suggested one.

Summary:

The essence of my narration is clear. It is always advisable to avoid comparing with others. This suggestion lies valid not only with finance but also in other aspects and decisions too. In contrary, it is considered healthy to compare yourself with past yourself to evaluate the growth.
